The easiest way to get to Park Güell
Buses H6 and D40 both take you to Travessera de Dalt, from which you walk to the park in 10 minutes. A bus ticket for an adult costs 2.40 euros one way.
You can also choose to take the metro, where you take the green line, L3, to the Lesseps or Vallcarca station. From here, the walk to the park also takes 10 minutes, and you use the same ticketing system as on the bus.
The history of Park Güell
Park Güell was designed and constructed by Antoni Gaudí together with his assistant Josep Maria Jujol between 1900 and 1914. The original idea was not to create a park but a residential area with exclusive plots.
It was the businessman Eusebi Güell who bought the area and planned the sale of these plots, and he hired Gaudí to create a unique experience for those who would come to live there. For example, two gatehouses, a staircase leading to a unique market hall where residents could shop, a square, and many elegant terraces were built here.
However, very strict rules were set for purchasing, and it was also very expensive for the majority of Barcelona residents at the time. As a result, the project became a failure, with only two buyers registering interest.
Instead, the park became a destination for people who wanted to experience the unique architecture and artworks in the park. Park Güell was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1984.
