How to Get to Madame Tussauds

The History of Madame Tussauds
Madame Tussauds wax museum opened in London in 1835. The founder, as the name suggests, was Marie Tussaud, a wax sculptor from France. She discovered her passion for making wax figures as a child and spent over thirty years traveling around Europe showcasing her creations.
Due to wars and unrest in France, she could not return to the country in the 1800s and therefore opened her museum on Baker Street after a long period of renting temporary spaces to display her figures.
One of the most popular parts of the original museum was the “Chamber of Horrors,” a room dedicated to various types of gruesome situations, such as people executed during the French Revolution.
Today, several of the wax figures created by Marie Tussaud herself still exist in the museum. The original museum had around 400 figures, but a fire in 1925 damaged a large number of them.
The oldest figure is Madame du Barry, created by Marie Tussaud’s mentor Curtius in 1765, and new figures are regularly added, which has allowed the museum to once again have several hundred figures in its exhibitions.
